In 1976 a referendum was held and passed by the citizens for the PRFD to become a Special Purpose Fire District in the State of South Carolina. PRFD covers 36 square miles in the Northeast portion of Darlington County.

The PRFD serves the unincorporated area of Darlington County between the City of Darlington and Florence County with 5,000 permanent residents. The district is made up of residential, Commercial and Industrial. PRFD is a combination Fire District responding to medical and fire calls using two stations, 6 career and 25 volunteers.

In 2010 the PRFD incorporated a BLS ambulance service. Our ambulance’s primary business is non-emergent transport and inter facility transport. When requested, PRFD will help Darlington County EMS with 911 responses.
